[ It feels forever ago when they had the dinner with Suzume and Hayato in their house when it was last night. One afternoon though, he wades through all those cats in the living room and goes to where Kido is, humming cheerfully along the way. Hopefully it won't be too much of a surprise when he suddenly hugs her from the back. ]
Let's go ice skating!
[ He doesn't have his glasses, because wearing the wrong prescription for his... "bad eye" gives him a headache and he finally decided not to wear it today. ]
[ It's hard to tell what's more surprising, the hug or ...happy Terry. It's a good mood that Kido doesn't want to ruin even though she startles pretty badly with the hug and that maybe ruined things a little. ]
Sure...? If you're that bored, I'll accompany you.
[ She'd been in the living room with a book, which she marks with a pressed flower bookmark and sets aside. These days, and possible for the rest of winter, that's basically all she's been doing around the house. Knitting sweaters with Toki or under the kotatsu or on the couch reading with her earbuds in. A nice leisure life... ]
[ It's a thin book on different types of tengus, with a price tag still attached to it. She took it from the occult shop where she's working and essentially uses the place like a library; this is going to get returned later and she's not buying it. ]
I did, huh? Anywhere but the bathhouse...
[ Ice skating feels sort of like just playing around, but that's fine. It'd be nice to go out and do something more than just reading in the occult shop or going shopping at the market. ]
Give me five minutes to get changed, alright? Make sure you're wearing something warm too.
[ A date trip to the bathhouse spa would be nice, but not the actual baths themselves... Terry is aware of what Kido thinks about that already. He wouldn't even have to pinpoint it...
He nods and goes to his room to get ready. He has a wind resistant jacket and gloves with hand warmers inside them. He gets out two of those to give to Kido too and waits for her in the living room. ]
[ Kido can't walk by the bathhouse anymore without the rising urge to throw shoes.
She doesn't really need all that much time to get changed, since she's already wearing her white/purple split hoodie and she always wears it outside anyways, but she stands in front of her closet for a minute anyways. It's this shirt that she puts on and then throws the hoodie back over it so it can't even be seen and it doesn't even matter. She doesn't own anything like tights, so it'll have to be just normal pants. ]
Alright, I'm ready.
[ It's a date outfit, but she looks exactly the same as she would at any other time, haha. ]
We don't need anything special for skating, do we? Kneepads or bandaids...?
[ Terry probably would have been genuinely happy if he knew, but her hoodie covers everything. That's a shame. He looks up at Kido and pretty much expected her to dress as her usual, so he smiles. Not like he has a choice. ]
They'll lend them our if you want some. I always have bandaids, so don't worry.
[ He still hasn't used up all of his hello kitty bandaids. Anyway, he hands Kido the two hand warmers. ]
These keep your hands warm if you keep these in your pockets. Let's go!
[ "I always have bandaids" somehow comes off as being worrisome instead of responsible, and even more worrisome is that it's not even surprising to hear.
Kido stares at the hand warmers for a moment before taking them, then slips both into her left pocket before holding out her right hand.
[ Since Kido held out her right hand, it only makes sense for Terry to hold it with his left one with the two missing fingers. He has gloves on with a hand warmer inside it, so it'll feel warm despite the glove. He doesn't intertwine fingers, but just holds her hand normally. ]
[ She should have chosen the other hand. It's kind of weird, with the hand warmer inside the glove making there be something more, but the lack of fingers making it be less, and she doesn't know how tightly she can hold on without it hurting. Gloves makes it hard to hold on anyways. She's overthinking things and decides not to do that anymore, making sure the door is locked behind them and doing those shuffle steps to make sure she doesn't slip before they even get to the lake itself.
Since she doesn't have a stall at the fair and lets Toki do his own thing for the most part, she doesn't go by the lake all that often either, surprised to see the hill there that kids are sliding down on— one of them seems to have lost his sled in the process and is just tumbling down the slope shrieking. It's hard to tell if he's laughing or crying or both. ]
[ It's also hard for Terry to tell that the kid is laughing or crying, but decides to leave the kid alone when he sees other kids go over to him.
There's a small stand that rents out ice skates of various sizes with various protective gear. Terry leads Kido over there and tells the vendor his shoe size. He looks over at Kido and waits. ]
Hm? It's pretty to look at, I guess. I'm usually indoors, though, where it's warm and I don't have to worry about falling or anything like that.
[ She's a homebody... The only real good thing about winter is the fact that warmth is that much more appreciated. She's never really played around in the snow, and the cold makes her face hurt a little and makes it difficult to lace the ice skates up, so she takes her gloves off for that and laces Terry's too while she's still crouching there. ]
Did you have snow where you lived before? It was by the beach or something?
[ California is some weird tropical place in her mind I guess. Eternal summers and glowing jellyfish and everything. ]
[ Hm. Terry thinks back and thinks Kido is referring to when he lived in California. He's moved long since people wanted him dead. ]
It only snowed maybe... once every five years? I think it was like that. I sometimes went on road trips with Jace to go more up north during winter. There was so much snow! There was enough to make snowmen and everything. Running was a pain in ankle high snow, but it was still fun from what I remember.
[ He stays still as Kido fastens his skates too, smiling as he recounts the memories. ]
Jace hated the cold, so he wore so many layers... I shoved snow down his back once and he let out this high pitched shriek. It was funny, but i got pelted with a snowball machine after...
[ Kido huffs a laugh, making sure the laces are tight and double knotted so they won't come undone, before pulling her gloves back on. ]
A snowball machine? What the heck... Serves you right.
[ She's more used to thinking of him as snake Orien than human Jace now, so Terry doing that to a cold blooded reptile is mean. Funny, though.
...
She scoops a little bit of snow up in her gloves before straightening up and dropping the snow down the back of Terry's collar. It's payback for Jace even though he already got payback. ]
[ Terry was humming with his back turned to Kido while he looked over the frozen lake, so that's why he doesn't see Kido coming with that snow. There's a startled yelp, but it's nothing high pitched, because it's impossible for his voice to go that high for some reason, and he turns around to immediately hug Kido.
[ This backfired immediately when she gets hugged, but yeah, she's incredibly warm even over her jacket now that Nekogami evolved from an ice cooler to a space heater. ]
S-sorry...
[ She hopes this isn't the knee-jerk reaction any time he gets ice stuffed down his neck by somebody. She goes to brush the snow off the back of his neck but it's melting so he gets ice water dripping down the back of his shirt instead. ]
[ Even though he's like this, he still feels happy. It's a disorienting thought the more Terry thinks about it, so he'll try to shove it out of his mind for the time being. The ice water dripping down his back makes him shiver for two seconds that Kido can obviously feel since they're hugging, but Terry quickly lets go. ]
It's okay! Let's go ice skating now! I'll hold your hand along the way.
[ Maybe moving around will keep him warm and they can forget about Kido trying to freeze Terry to death. Yeah.
She takes Terry's hand again— the same left one in her right— and then stares down at her feet. They're still standing on the riverbank where the area right around the lake has been cleared of snow, with the ground icy and hard but with a dip from ground level to the actual ice rink because the water level was low to begin with.
Seems dangerous.
She looks to Terry to drag them both onto the ice or however they're supposed to do this. ]
[ Can you go fast on ice? Is there enough traction to accelerate from 0 to 80mph in half a second? They're things Kido doesn't want to test out, so makes the beginner mistake of locking her knees so they don't buckle, and takes little steps towards Terry, not trusting her skates to slip out from below her for any larger ones.
The grip on Terry's hand might as well be a vicegrip. ]
[ Terry doesn't intend on letting go of Kido's hand, so it makes it much easier when Kido's grip is strong on his hand. It kinda hurts, but he'll deal with it. ]
Small steps, small steps... and try to relax your body a little.
[ There's the thought that if she relaxes any more, her jelly legs are going to give and she'll fall right onto the ground without slipping on anything, but she tries anyways, loosening her grip a little and also bending her knees a little at the expense of leaning forward slightly and now her weight's off balanced and more towards Terry than her actual feet.
Skating is hard and she's not even on the ice yet. ]
It'll be easier once we're skating, right? Then you can just... pull me along.
[ And he does that--careful not to go too fast and adjusts the speed whenever Kido looks like she's panicking even more. They're finally on the ice. He's happy that she's leaning towards him more, but. ]
Ah, wait. Don't lean in too much. I won't let you fall, so stand up a little straighter.
[ It's tough, trying to stand straighter without falling backwards the other way instead, Kido needing to take both of Terry's hands so they're facing each other and Terry is forced to skate backwards to pull her forward.
There's forward-backwards balance, and then there's also side-to-side balance, with the thin blades and the fact that the ice isn't perfectly smooth like an indoor ice rink would be, with no way to smooth it back over after so many people have already scratched up the surface, especially at the edge of the lake.
She looks around and there's like five-year-old kids zipping across the ice with no fear in the world. ]
Is it easier the faster you go? Like with riding a bike?
[ Terry can't think of anything right now though. Terry will keep leading her with both hands. ]
It's okay to take your time. We can come back here together at another day so I can guide you through it. Practice makes perfect. Did you want me to lead you around first?
